Are LED’s dimmable? The answer is yes and no. As in theory all LED’s are dimmable, that is if the ‘dimmer’ is placed between the transformer/driver and the LED, but in reality this is often not practical, so the answer is more complicated.

In retro-fit applications where existing MR16 down lighters are replaced with LED lamps it normally creates a combination of problems that prevent the lamps from dimming. Firstly they tend to not turn off as most dimmers ‘leak’ current, and normally this is enough to power the LED. The second problem is the dimmer will be way under-loaded. The vast majority of dimmers have a minimum load of about 20% of their maximum rating, so a 500W dimmer will want at least 100W in order to dim.

Intellibus has launched two LED dimmers, a 90W Rotary Dimmer, and a 240W Bell-press Dimmer, especially designed to overcome these pitfalls of LED Dimming.
There is a catch however, and that is there are still so much variation in LED design and manufacture quality that there is no guarantee that they will work with all ‘dimmable’ LED’s. To overcome this problem Intellibus also offer their own 220V, 3W LED Lamp. The Intellibus LED Lamp when used in combination with the Intellibus LED Dimmer can offer you a solution that is guaranteed to work. Tried and tested with both LED dimmers, the driver inside the lamp is optimised to offer a smooth and reliable dimming curve.

Sharing the common goal of working to make buildings greener, more human friendly and nicer enviroments has always been a of interest to us. Long before Green was the the buzz colour, we are were dimming and switching lighting, and saving our clients a fortune in enegy costs. This was often unintenial and just a spin off of setting up proffesional lighting control systems, with beautifully dimmed scenes, and carefully considered automated timed events. We and our clients dont take this for granted any longer as now those signifigant savings represent real, measurable effencies in energy saving, maintenanace, and costs. We hope to make a valuable contribution and that this synergy between oursleves and GBCSA will offer a platform for us to learn, share, network, and grow our green friendly business. Keep an eye on our website for our Intellibus LED lighting, and more on using smart lighting control to save you cash
